The windscreen pillars and doors make me think it's nothing more than a late 1930 Chummy with a roof added; a one-off. What clues am I missing?

That was my first thought, too, but the waistline is too high for it to be a simple add-on to the basic chummy body.

It does look very much like an AE Chummy, from the waist down.
(Perhaps it has just returned from Spain?)

Several Willys jeeps had hardtops made after the war when used by civilians...

Looking closely you can just make out the Chummy windscreen post! That and the shape of the door, even down to the downwards pointing handle leads me to think it is a saloon made from an AE.

OK, looking at Colin's photo, the waistline is higher than I thought, so yes, I agree, a hardtop mounted on an AE chummy.

Thank you all for your observations and the conclusion that we have come to. I was loathe to make such an assumption without any agreement from others, so your input is appreciated. After all, it is all about making the Archive resources as accurate as they can possibly be. I think we can all agree, it is a remarkable piece of work and certainly by someone very skilled...
