Possibly a stupid question.....but I would feel even more stupid if I went ahead an b#£%×ed up the engine.
Is it OK to top up a sump containing sae 30 oil from 'Classic' with sae 30 green 'Duckhams'

Assuming that they are both mineraloils, I woundn't envisage a problem.

As David says, as long as it's mineral oil intended for cars you shouldn't have any issues.
What you mustn't do is mix different basic oil types e.g. mineral with castor oil.
And if you're running an old-fashioned 'straight' oil, adding a modern detergent oil might cause problems (if you know the engine is spotlessly clean inside then there's no issue, but high detergent oils might dislodge bits of cack which have accumulated over the years).
Personally I use 20W50, as it gives much better oil circulation at start-up. If you're using a straight grade, warm the engine up carefully before attempting any heroics.
And finally remember - any oil is better than no oil!

So, when my old granddad said that Duckhams was different - not only green but shouldn't be mixed with other engine oils - was he right or was it just a sales ploy?

Don't see why not. Of course this is the current offering, products and formulations 'evolve' over the years so it may have been different in the past.

With the price of engine oil as it is, if you're in any doubt drain the sump and refill with whatever you feel is appropriate. You only need 2 litres on a normal engine/sump.
20W50 is fine for both engine and gearbox. If your engine uses oil then expensive oil is a waste of money.

Any modern oil is far better than any oil available when the Seven was new.
The engine is very lightly stressed and has no need of the advanced oils of today.

Agree with what has been said before with the proviso that once you start using SAE30, I’d carry on. Putting 20W50 in a car that is used to SAE30 might ‘clean’ the engine too much and with only the sump mesh to filter it you may have problems.
My advice would be to seek pit the cheapest SAE 30 you can find.

When i last bought some SAE30 there were only 1L containers on the shelf so I asked if they had it in 5L. The very young assistant replied "so, just how big is your lawnmover?"
I left and found it on Ebay...
