Gordon England prototype - AllAlloyCup - 02-03-2018 7FD29174-3757-4658-B91A-E4AAE48D402F.jpeg (Size: 156.01 KB / Downloads: 689) This photo, taken in 1925, has recently been posted on the Gallery and shows some interesting features not seen on later Cup models. Firstly the screen pillars disappear into the scuttle, near to where The sidemarker sidelights are mounted rather than the front wings. Also the radiator shell appears to be a colour? No valances and extra bracing for the lamps and front wings. Would this be BRG at that time at LeMans? Lastly the tail shape appears to be different from the production shape. RE: Gordon England prototype - Mike Costigan - 03-03-2018 My understanding is that this 1925 Le Mans entry was the first Cup-style body that Gordon England built, and as a result of the race performance he went into production, the name coming from the Le Mans Biennial Cup competition. So this could be describes as the prototype Cup Model; note the door shape is very different from the production version, too. RE: Gordon England prototype - Chris Garner - 03-03-2018 Both the radiator core and the lights are protected by a mesh screen. That on the radiator is very similar to that fitted to the three Work's cars entered for the '23 Le Mans, being rounded or curved. The mesh was not sufficient however to stop a stone piercing the core, leading to retirement on lap eight. Samuelson is behind the wheel with Gordon England alongside. Once repaired the car was out again in August, at Boulogne this time, with Gordon England driving and his wife as passenger. They finished 9th. The car was deemed a success and so went into production as the Cup model. RE: Gordon England prototype - AllAlloyCup - 03-03-2018 I’m interested in what’s on the radiator cap? Is it a Calormeter? It looks like a small elephant! Some racing cars often have an overflow fitting On the radiator cap. Is it on the Boulogne images? The back end of a Cup does look like the rear end Of a baby elephant..... Bill G RE: Gordon England prototype - David.H - 03-03-2018 What is the box under the running board? It looks as if the top is a step & that it is in fact a drawer? I think the mascot looks more like a mule/donkey! RE: Gordon England prototype - Mike Costigan - 03-03-2018 The box under the running board is probably to carry small spares; for the race any repairs had to be made using only parts carried on the car, so maybe a supply of nuts, bolts and washers! Those two are the only ones I’ve seen. Ps just bought a nickel baby elephant mascot! Here’s the baby elephant mentioned previously, a period AA badge and an old SA7C badge. I’ll post photos of them mounted on the Cup Progress Thread. Still intrigued by the rear of this car...
