Clutch pedal Spindle 4 speed box - goodwoodweirdo - 08-10-2023

Hello chaps,

OK the next hurdle in the Austin build ..... I see there is massive play in the clutch pedal spindle to clutch pedal so I think the best option is to replace it or have the worn guide welded and machined. so my question is does anyone sell new spindles ? Only find the taper pins... are the spindles same for 3 and 4 speed boxes ? (is it worth having a few made ?) and in the woodrow manual they talk of packing washers, both of my boxes are missing these :-( are they available or anything special ? I'm wondering if there is another vehicle which uses a suitable packing ...

I hope this means I'll get a working clutch

many thanks as always Matt

You can make a clutch spindle from 5/8" bar stock and use rollpins 6mm for the clutch levers if the case is worn you can ream it out and sleeve it with 5/8" bore thin wall tube. Just make sure the levers are aligned as no two levers are drilled the same. Terry

Do you mean play between the spindle and the gearbox casing? If yes it is easily remedied by rolling a bushing from zinc sheet of suitable thickness (which you can buy on eBay).

Beware with clutch cross-shafts, they weren't jig-drilled at the factory so mixing and matching levers and cross shafts is usually hit or miss at best.

thanks for the comments, its the pedal that has way too much play before engaging the spindle; I also need to make up some distance spacers as the spindle is loose enough to relocate itself and the release bearing preventing it to work.

cheers Matt
