Flywheel Nut Spanner Size? - John P - 30-06-2023
Anyone happen to know what size spanner is required for the flywheel nut on a 1 5/16" crank engine?

Perhaps someone else could confirm my belief that it is 3/4 Whit? (33mm across flats)

I originally asked this question as I needed to order a suitable spanner before taking the engine out of the car.
Having now got the engine separated from the gearbox I have measured the flywheel nut and, as Colin suggested, it is 33mm A/F.
Just waiting for a new socket to arrive as I seem to have every possible size up to 32mm but not the one needed.

33mm is the size of a 3/4 whit socket.

1.3" exactly - 33mm roughly!
I don't mean to sound pernickety but people coming here for reference info would be better served by an accurate answer in the right units. Not everyone these days understands what imperial measurements are (Germans claim never to have heard of them, while having feet and inches of their own). Some people even use centimetres for heavens' sake...
I will quite cheerfully eat humble pie if anyone can convince me Whitworth tools used metric dimensions!

I'm sure that Mr Whitworth used neither the metric system nor decimal Imperial units.
Why not get a 3/4 BSW socket?

Interesting that it is exactly 1.3" - I wasn't aware of that - but not surprised it wasn't based on mm.
In Imperial units (Christian units, as my old physics teacher used to call them) 1.3" would be 1 1/4" + 1/20" - so not one of the usual sequence of sizes?

1 3/10, surely? Most foot rules are marked in 16ths, 8ths and 10ths.
