I have a late high frame rubber mounted engine sitting on a test stand on my garage floor. As there were a number of interesting mistakes in the assembly of the engine, I removed the starter motor to check to see if that had also been bodged. It looks like it should.
Connecting it to a battery, it whizzes merrily and throws the starter cog forward. The Bendix spring is not tight, the teeth are crisp.
On the engine it makes noise but doesn't spin the engine... It is hard to know if it is engaging with the flywheel... what should I be looking to check?

First thing to check the battery power and size of connection leads.
