Free - Hobbies-style Treadle Scroll Saw - Jamie - 09-02-2023

I have an old treadle saw, Hobbies I believe, that is in need of restoration. It appears to be complete apart from needing a new belt and blade. I am unlikely to ever get around to fixing it up, so if anyone would like it, it is free to collect from Aylesbury.

It is a crude, cheaply-built device, similar to the picture. I imagine that it is a more recent model, not one of the early examples.

I have a broadly similar circular saw.
One difference is that the pedal on mine is cast iron, with the Hobbies logo cast in it.
I used a Singer treadle sewing machine round section leather belt, which I got new from the Singer Shop.
I imagine that the fret saw would be much more useful than the circular saw, which is a curiosity at best.

I used to have one of these and I used it for cutting new clock hands for a longcase clock specialist restorer. I had to forge down steel plate from a 2.5 mm plate boss to a less than 1mm point and then pierce and chamfer classic forms hoping the blade would not snap and let the upper arm smack me in the face!
Eeeeh, what we had to do to earn a crust in them days...

I had a similar Hobbies treadle saw back in the day (about 65 years ago) with the Hobbies logo in the cast iron treadle feet as 39 Jet describes. It was nearly all cast iron memory tells me. Used it for typical Hobbies fretwork projects. My mother had a number of toast racks!!!

Thanks for the memory Jamie
