Obscure Question - Steve kay - 05-10-2022

Today I was telephoned by a nearby engineer, usually concerned with competition engines with many cylinders and camshafts. However, someone has just bought him an Austin Eight engine, and he was looking for info regarding torque settings. By co-incidence I knew that I would be meeting an Eight owner for coffee later in the morning, but his Eight had never had the engine out, and he did not recall having any technical info. Head torque nuts was  quite easy to find, and on my shelves I came upon required tappet clearance and arcane details such as big end and main bearing clearances. But no success in finding torque settings for mains and big ends. Can anyone help?

How similar was it to the Big Seven engine?

There is an 'Eight' owners group I found on Google who might have some intel, also I would suggest that there may be no published figures given the era of the vehicle. You may find the well known phrase 'tighten evenly using a spanner of normal length'...

Not very, more like a Ten's kid brother according to the very general info I have

Thanks for suggestions, I think our man in Brynmawr was the only bidder for the handbook so lets hope it has torque settings. Don't know what to say about the Eight, not exactly the pioneering piece of concept and engineering represented by the Seven. Competition history a bit thin.

Been on here before, but

Alan, many thanks. The film is on the Eight website, and was indeed on the forum. It revealed Forumists as being capable of being film analysts and interpreters of the highest order. Filmed over at least two days, with changes of crew and costume, but not the car. I seem to recall that it was here in early lockdown giving us time to work out every bit of the route, with some sections not accessible, some still promising fun. Has anyone yet managed to travel the bits still available in our Sevens? Has anyone yet worked out whether the camera crew got to some of the locations by car, or required horses?

This sort of publication for the Eight would be useful?  Are the bolt sizes / torque values quoted transferrable?

I was given an Austin 8 handbook today, would your friend like it?
