early car angled number plates - JonE - 06-09-2022

I was trying to look through some early photos but not having much luck.
How much evidence is there for the early angled registration plates and why do we think that they were so? Looking through the Boulogne photos, they seem to be mostly vertical, with some gently curved in a side-to-side plane.

Perhaps to clear the shock absorber links?

Regards,

Stuart

weren't the early cars lacking those, tho'?

Lovely big photo here, Jon, thanks to Austin

I may be misinterpreting what I can see but those look like shock absorbers to me.

Stuart

yes indeed. But none of those are actually angled plates as per the ones seen which tilt upward away from the directly vertical plane. (i.e. so a viewer in front of a car could read them full on with a tilted-down head...)

Apologies, Jon, I misunderstood.

Regards,

Stuart

This presumably contemporary view of a 1923 car seems to show the plate tilted from vertical as you suggest?

excellent! Hadn't seen that one, and it definitely has a slant (but not as much as some of the restored cars, would you say?)
Any more of those around?

Jon, did you look through the friends gallery pictures? The photo above is amongst them. When you say early cars, even the 1930 police car has a gently upward facing number plate, but many of the early cars seem more vertical...

RE: early car angled number plates - JonE - 07-09-2022

exactly. Which batch is the police car in out of interest, Nick? I do forget about those images, and they aren't easy to flick through for an eZ gallery!
