Rear hub tapers - Adrian Payne - 19-08-2022
Just removed the outer hubs today and they appear to have been assembled with some form of loctite.
Is this usual practice with worn tapers or is this a good idea with good fitting ones.
Also, how can you check if the tapers have been lapped too much and the inner halfshaft gear is going to contact the diff cage without bolting it all up and seeing if it spins easily.

Yes always use the green strong loctite and they are fit and forget.
I have always done this and even with halfshafts with marks in they stay put.
If you need to remove just heat them up

I use Loctite 660 which is designed as a taper lock. Saves having to do too much lapping on components that are already quite worn.

Loctite 660 on order.
I made up a dummy bearing which was an easy slide fit in the hub and on the axle casing. I could then slide the halfshaft and hub in and out to check clearance.
I reckon that if the taper comes to the end of the hub there would still be some clearance, unless someone had already machined the halfshaft gears for more clearance!!!
