Insurance for a 17 year old - ollie cox - 05-02-2018 Hi all Passed my test about 5 months ago and started looking at specialist callsic car insurers, it seems the Minimum amount of time I can be insured for is 1 year and only one company gave me a quote at roughly 1500. Which is a tad to much for a 17 year old student working as a part time waiter, espically considering this would be driven by me maybe 3 times a year for fun as i have a modern daily car. I would be interested to know if anyone else has had these issues and if they managed to find a way around this? Thanks for any help Ollie c RE: Insurance for a 17 year old - Ruairidh Dunford - 05-02-2018 Ollie - when are you going to be 18? RE: Insurance for a 17 year old - Hedd_Jones - 05-02-2018 Ollie. I had the same problem some 11 years ago. So its nothing new Shop around. I guess the benefit I had was that I was insuring a standard saloon. As soon as you mention 'modifications' and 'sports' or 'Special' to an insurance company you are asking for high premiums at your age. RE: Insurance for a 17 year old - Ruairidh Dunford - 05-02-2018 If you can wait until you are 18 in August Ollie, Richard Hoskins (Hiscox) now provide a service whereby you can drive a Seven so long as the owner is seated beside you. Not ideal but may save you a lot of money, if you can put up with it. RE: Insurance for a 17 year old - ollie cox - 05-02-2018 I’ve heard roughly of that scheme ruairidh and it sounds like a good idea!, hedd. May I be cheeky and ask roughly how much you paid? I have today received information all about the scheme that will be published in the next Association Magazine - look out for it. Nick Turley has done much of the spadework to bring this to fruition and is to be congratulated. Both my sister and I were able to get insurance on classics at the age of 17. In her case it was a Seven and in my case it was my A35. This would have been 11 years ago for her and 9 years ago for me-We went through an independent broker who was also an enthusiast and willing to do the leg work at the time. However, it wasn't cheap and came out at around £800/900 in my case. I can't remember precisely now. Once we were 18 we were both able to get a policy with RH, but I seem to remember we had to argue our cases pretty hard. However, the price was a lot lower. So it was possible then, but far from ideal. It's great to see people doing work like Nick to help with insurance, which is a minefield! RE: Insurance for a 17 year old - Railwaydave - 06-02-2018 I have just added a just turned 18yr old (unrelated) to my Austin 7 RH policy to drive my box saloon. He's been driving for 8 months. The provisio's are that I accompany him at all times when driving, and the excess is raised to £350. It excludes commuting and there was NO EXTRA CHARGE. So the system works and a big thank you to those that negotiated it to encourage young drivers. All I've got to do now is get my rebuilt engine to run! Dave |
