Curious Underfloor Marking? - Mick Hobday - 24-03-2022

During the restoration of my 1932 Four Seat Tourer I found this triangular plate tucked away, spot welded under the transmission tunnel, just about under where the rear seat cushion rests.  There ought to be a reason for it to be there, but what?  Has anyone seen similar plates attached?  I'm wondering if a variety of shapes were used in order to identify the fabricator for quality control or bonus/pay accounting, somewhat  similar to medieval masons' marks.  Any ideas?

I've got two under the rear floor of our RN, one between the diff and spare wheel and one hiding above the torque tube.

Is there a hole on the other side that this covers?

RE: Curious Underfloor Marking? - Mick Hobday - 25-03-2022

Colin, excellent question!  There's a 1/4" hole, now neatly covered by the triangle.  See top view attached.
Dave - my car is one of the first with rear petrol tank, so exactly where your rearward triangle is located I have the large hole provided to access the tank sender unit.
Must dash - I have a few more rivets to count...

Thanks, that's jogged my memory, there is a 1/4" hole above the triangle. the hole is for locating the panel for assembly.
