I am rebuilding my speedometer on my car and was wondering is the speed in mph or kph or neither.

It really doesn’t matter — when you can’t hear anything above the wind you’re doing 60.

For a ‘29 chummy the original speedo is a Smiths PA in mph.

Some export cars had a kph speedo. At least my 1930 RK had when it was exported.

It’s easy to tell. If you are doing 80 it’s in kilometres.

I recall as a small boy playmates being very impressed by the 80 mph speedo on my Dads RP!
Incidentally the speedo later proved conservative, reading lower than various "moderns" compared with, so I suspect the top speed on true level no wind of 50 mph was accurate. On a regular 60 mile trip I used to acheive point to point times favourably comparable with my father in his 1952 Hillman but keeping to 50 mph indicated.

My RP regularly clocks 85mph. This must be under-reading quite badly, as the 140,000 mile run into Hereford only takes about seven minutes, so I must actually be doing more that 1,200,000 mph.

Or about 1/60th of the speed of light! Mind you, speedometer readings are all purely relative anyway.

My Magmo speedometer gently swings between 35 and 45 mph most of the time but it feels close to the speed of light sometimes...
