Wood Glue recommendations ? - Steve Bryant - 09-02-2022

In preparation to building the frame work for my AD van kit framework (Heath). I am looking for a current type of glue to build this with.

John's recommendation 30 years ago when I bought the kit was Aerodux 500 ( if memory serves me). This is proving to be extremely difficult to get here in Calgary even though we have a aircraft industry of sorts here.

So what is the current choice of those building wood frame bodys for a suitable glue? I can get specialist epoxy's here but I'm hesitant to use something I'm not familiar with on this kit.

Cheers,
Stephen

Martin Prior is your man.

There are some very good wood glues around nowadays.
here is one
https://marinestore.co.uk/collano-semparoc-60-wood-glue-(balcotan-replacement)-cu49565.html

The older glues required excellent joints.
The modern glue are better at gap filling ( Bad Joints )
Look towards boating supplies.

I used to swear by Cascamite (old fashioned caseine resin glue used in my school days) but now I use PU Woodworking adhesive (AKA Gorilla Glue and its variants...)
However, I'd wait to see what Martin Prior recommends for ash framing.

Resorcinol Formaldehyde Adhesive used to be the best for woodwork on boats.
Also used in timber airframes.
It has a better bond than most epoxies.

I have just bought a pair of door frames from Martin for my ORT. You might be surprised by the glue he recommended for them.

I’m doing some ash framing for my Lea Francis and have selected ever build lumberjack polyurethane glue for the job as it is waterproof and gap filling. I would be interested to see what Martin recommends as I am only part way through the job!

One of the glues I mentioned early is a polyurethene based glue.
This is becoming a very good choice Gorilla Glue do a version.

I bought about 30 gallon of Aerodux 500 to glue the arch on the bridge at Doune together about 6months ago.

Hi Steve,
I would highly recommend West Systems. Two part glue and comes with metered pumps for correct ratios etc. Also there as fillers of various sorts. A very comprehensive offering. Have used for several ash frames and and built up ply laminates with great success. Very strong. I will do another post with the specific item codes when I get into the office.
