Early BMW - Colin Morgan - 06-12-2021

How do people feel about these early BMWs?

RE: Early BMW - JonE - 06-12-2021

I've always thought them a bit 'Sid the Sloth' personally, but I wouldn't turn one down

would look a lot better with full touring wings instead of cycle type IMHO. Deserves a lower stance as well.

RE: Early BMW - Mike Costigan - 07-12-2021

Would look a lot better without the Ihle conversion, but back in the 1930s they were all the rage:

Love them! I was much impressed by the lovely lines of Ihle's bodywork (cycle wings notwithstanding) when I first came across the Dixie.

RE: Early BMW - Nick Salmon - 07-12-2021

I think they are lovely...

RE: Early BMW - Bob Culver - 07-12-2021

Were the engine and other rollingĀ bearings metric? Those are serious spare tyres on the fraulein's car. Has she been driving up the avalanche slopes?

RE: Early BMW - Colin Morgan - 07-12-2021

I think the red one looks better with its V windscreen. Not seen these before.

If the mirrored engine turns the other way, doesn't the car go backwards? Is it just the engine and steering that is swapped - the box and axle are the same as Longbridge?

RE: Early BMW - Mike Costigan - 07-12-2021

The blue and red cars are Ihle 600s - in effect earlier Dixis or BMWs rebodied in the late 1930s; Keep your eyes out for the 2022A issue of the Grey Mag, which will have some photos of the Ihle 800, which I think is prettier.

RE: Early BMW - Colin Morgan - 07-12-2021

It makes sense that these bodies were designed at a similar time to the BMW 328, which they resemble. It would have been surprising if they were from 1930 - only the Swallows and GE Cup models were that well styled back then?
