Fibre washers - Hugh Barnes - 25-07-2021

Does anyone have a good source of (quality) fibre washers? I bought a selection box through Ebay some while back as they were marked as being imperial sizes. However, the range is poor (there are many of the sizes that are simply a thin 'ring' and don't work well for drain plugs etc.) But their worst fault is they are rock hard and I fear don't behave as originals would have done.

Any ideas anyone?

I've struggled too, then found this company.

"Manufacturer of Washers, Strips, Gaskets, Seals and Sheeting" https://www.rhnuttall.co.uk

Fairly pricey for small quantities, but having inherited some decent quality wad punches I went mad and bought a sheet of 2mm red fibre so I can make my own.

Soaking in warm water prior to installation makes them seat and seal very nicely.

I have more than I need so if you'd like some pm me.

That's very generous Colin, and much apreciated. Let me determine exactly the size I want (rear axle drain plug is my current concern) and I'll drop you a PM...

thanks once again..

You are quite right, Ruairidh, but troubling Jamie for one washer and the associated postage seems a little overkill. I was hoping that someone knew of a mixed set I could put on the shelf to cover all eventualities - and that would still be the ideal (for many of us, I suspect) but Colin's kind offer will get me out of trouble in the short term...

Edit to add: Though, I do now see Jamie does a selection box which may be the way to go...

"Hoses Direct" sell fibre washers in imperial sizes, when I see you Hugh I can probably produce a sample or two (I need to remind myself whether they are narrow or not).
You wouldn't want to order just one though, I order a few when I'm buying something else. (If stuck for something specific, give me a shout).
I usually boil them in water for a minute or two before using them, softens them up a bit.
