It was on this day in 1963 that the film Cleopatra had its premiere. The movie took a long time and a very great deal of money to make. Lots of footage was abandoned. This shows what was intended to be a gang of Nubian slaves who were to be seen passing behind the windows of Cleopatra’s boudoir, whilst she was discussing certain matters with Anthony. On seeing the rushes, Elisabeth Taylor failed to realise that it was just the stage crew checking that the machinery would work and the whole thing was cut. Richard Burton later used the Ruby to escape unnoticed to the pub when avoiding rehearsals.Next week, what a Box saloon contributed to Spartacus.

Thanks Steve for passing on your obviously in-depth research on the historic background to the photo.     I had my doubts about the authenticity, but I am now convinced that it is real!
