Bonnet alignment - Barry Townsend - 13-05-2021 I've noticed on many photos that the bonnet fit is less than perfect, especially at the lower rear. It seems as if most cars are suffering from a slight frame sag or the radiator is a bit high? Also it seems worse on the offside. Is this the case and how can it be checked without a major strip down. Am I being too fussy? RE: Bonnet alignment - Peter Clayton - 13-05-2021 I think the problem is usually one of scuttle sag. I believe the body drop can be caused by the packing deteriorating and/or the baulkhead area becoming weakened by decay. RE: Bonnet alignment - Ruairidh Dunford - 13-05-2021 A gap appearing at the rear bottom of the bonnet is almost always a sign that the chassis is starting to bend just behind the rear engine mounts. My Parents' Chummy is doing this, if only they had not used it!! Next time it's off the road for an thorough overhaul, check the front body mountings and you can either jack those up or cheat and remount the radiator under the flitch panels rather than over them! RE: Bonnet alignment - Robert Leigh - 13-05-2021 A bit of sag in the chassis offside may be the result of that point being weaker where the steering box mounts. Mostly it seems evident after at least 50 years of use, and is less likely if the car is used by persons of modest weight throughout its life. It's only my theory but it fits the facts. RE: Bonnet alignment - Tony Griffiths - 13-05-2021 Easily fixed. Now all straight and level: RE: Bonnet alignment - Ruairidh Dunford - 13-05-2021 Well, that saved me taking the body off, stripping the chassis completely and then putting all back together after straightening - thank you Tony! RE: Bonnet alignment - Reckless Rat - 13-05-2021 The same affliction besets the Citroën 2CV. The chassis bends just next to the front suspension mount points. RE: Bonnet alignment - Ruairidh Dunford - 13-05-2021 Tony - can you fix my father's circle parting? RE: Bonnet alignment - Duncan Grimmond - 13-05-2021 "The same affliction besets the Citroën 2CV. The chassis bends just next to the front suspension mount points." but the only fix is a new chassis! |
