Shock absorbers - Jack in the Box - 07-04-2021 I need to replace the Newton, telescopic shock absorbers on the rear of an Austin 7 special. They were purchased in 1949 and I have the original order details. Does anyone know where I might buy replacements or of a catalogue that can point me to modern replacements please? Many thanks. Alan RE: Shock absorbers - Jack in the Box - 07-04-2021 Just to update things. I have now removed the shock absorbers and found that they each have an oil drain/fill screw. In the absence of any leads for replacements so far, I have drained the old fluid out (quite a bit of water) and refilled with some 5w30 oil. They now have much more resistance, but one had less so I drained it again and put some thicker oil in. Now feels much better. Once I fix the leak on the fuel tank, that I had to remove to get access, I’ll try the car out and let you know how it feels. Alan RE: Shock absorbers - Howard Wright - 07-04-2021 Hi Alan On my first special I used classic mini rear shock absorbers. They fitted almost exactly as shown in Bill Williams book. However I guess it will depend upon the layout of your shock absorbers whether this is appropriate. Cheers Howard RE: Shock absorbers - Jack in the Box - 07-04-2021 Howard, Thanks for responding. Interestingly my wife and another suggested classic mini units. With the existing ones the nominal distance between the centres of the eyes is 13”. Do you know that dimension for the mini units please? Thanks Alan RE: Shock absorbers - MartinH - 07-04-2021 Might be worth speaking with Vintage & Classic Shock Absorbers in South Croydon. http://www.vintageandclassicshockabsorbers.co.uk/ RE: Shock absorbers - Jack in the Box - 07-04-2021 Thanks Martin, I looked at their website but they seem to focus on lever arm shock absorbers rather than telescopics. Alan RE: Shock absorbers - Howard Wright - 07-04-2021 Hi Alan Sorry that car is long gone and I can’t remember the dimensions. Perhaps Minisport or one of the other suppliers might be able to help? Cheers Howard RE: Shock absorbers - JonE - 07-04-2021 https://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Suspension/Shock_Absorbers/Std/442001.aspx?191004&ReturnUrl=/shop/classic/suspension/shock~absorbers.aspx|Back%20to%20shop what sort of ends do yours have? I was wondering about what the Speedex uses, but my fronts have a central threaded upright rod and lock nut. RE: Shock absorbers - Henry Harris - 07-04-2021 Info about Newton telescopic shock absorbers.... http://www.morganseriesone.com see Running gear, front shock absorbers. RE: Shock absorbers - Jack in the Box - 08-04-2021 Thanks Jon, Eyes at both ends. I’ll compare the length dimensions with the Newton’s, as mine are not installed vertically. The ones you highlight are a possibility and won’t break the bank. Alan Henry, Thanks. I had seen this website. Perhaps a Morgan dealer could help with supply. Alan |
