Scottish Speedy - AllAlloyCup - 13-12-2017 A few years back I was given , by Keith Elliott, a pre-war roll of 35mm B&W negative which had never been printed!Keith rallied and trialled MG’s Before the war and owned garages in Edinburgh The roll of film had interesting RAF images of Hawker Hawk biplanes Plus a series taken at a MGCC? Trial, Moorfoots? In 1936/37/38? A big event as Works teams from Allard, M.G., Singer etc were all represented. In the mix was a nice photo of a Speedy which I thought I’d share. Note the Knobblies!! RE: Scottish Speedy - Ruairidh Dunford - 13-12-2017 I too have a photo of this car: RE: Scottish Speedy - JonE - 13-12-2017 SY 5543? not on register..? Interesting that the back has been chopped even at that date. RE: Scottish Speedy - stuartu - 13-12-2017 My copies of Donald Cowbourne's trials books are inaccessible at the moment but memory tells me therein is a photo of a Speedy in an Edinburgh(?) Trial at about time. If so and if someone with a copy to hand would be good enough to check, we will learn who the driver was. Regards, Stuart RE: Scottish Speedy - Steve Jones - 13-12-2017 (13-12-2017, 12:34 PM)stuartu Wrote: My copies of Donald Cowbourne's trials books are inaccessible at the moment but memory tells me therein is a photo of a Speedy in an Edinburgh(?) Scottish Sporting Car Club's Winter Half day Trial February 1939. Driver Leslie Bisset. Comp Number 11. However, in 1937 and 1938, Bisset had used an MG on that event. The MG is pictured from those years also (WM 9625) and the detail looks remarkably like the MG in the background of the first photo above. Looking at the photo of Bisset and his Speedy in Cowbourne, his hat and that of his passenger appear the same as those in the photo above. Bisset is not listed as having entered any Edinburgh Trial in any car. Steve RE: Scottish Speedy - stuartu - 13-12-2017 Thanks Steve! Well, at least I knew it was Scottish if not Edinburgh. Over to Ruaridh to trace Mr Blisset's photograph album. PS Steve, any urgency about the greaser? RE: Scottish Speedy - Dutch-Ulster rep - 13-12-2017 Sir H. Austins "Austin" (24) driven by Capt. A.C.R. White, which overturned and crashed at Ballystockart, a tricky part of course. Car leaped 10 ft. in air and driver & mechanic injured. 24/8/30. RE: Scottish Speedy - AllAlloyCup - 13-12-2017 I note that the Speedy in my Photo still has its factory wings so perhaps Ruairidh ‘s photo is later? Also the competition no. the Speedy is 1 not 11. The film roll also had a rare MG NE in action on a hill, Which had been a racing car, but had been converted To a Trials machine. Only 7NE’s were made and that one still survives in Switzerland. I regret not chatting more to some of these Old MGCC folk when I had my M.G. VA DHC, which carried a SSCC badge, but was more of a touring car. No particular reason but Ruairidh's photo looks a lot later, even post war perhaps? The SSCC ran a number of trials each year. February the 'Winter Half Day Trial', March the 'Half Day Trial', April the 'Highland Two Day Trial', June the 'Inter Club Team Trial', September the 'Autumn Half Day Trial' and October the 'Anniversary Trial'. Perhaps not all of them in 1939 though! Of course, the SSCC still exist and are very active. Do they have any archives records perhaps? Steve PS: No urgency, Stuart. DW Trial perhaps? RE: Scottish Speedy - Dutch-Ulster rep - 13-12-2017 Not Scottish , but nice anyway. Capt. A.C.R. White in his Austin (24) passing through Combe before his car overturned (24/8/30). Capt. A. Frazer Nash "Austin" (22) leading a bunch of cars round Glen Hill (24/8/30). |
