You may also find that some varieties of brake spring tools (particularly the ones designed to deal with US pattern ‘Bendix’ duo-servo brake shoe return springs) have a similar arrangement to the diy one on the end of one of their handles

I made one of these tools out of and old screwdriver, they work a treat.
