Wrapping for harness - where to buy? - Bela - 16-07-2020

I must purchase some parts for renewing the harness of my Austin 7 Special. Because it is a special I have to build the harness myself.

I found some parts in several online shops. My Morris Minor rebuild by Charles Ware has a very good one, because wires can easily be laid outwards and the ends can be closed very good.

I can't find such a wrapping for the harness. Here in D there are some sources but non seems as good as the one which came with the Minor.

Is such a harness  a good solution or do you have other suggestions for a A 7-  e.g. wrapping with some kind of tape?

I had good success with "Expandable Braided Sleeving" from auto electrical supplies on my Special.

Just make sure you buy a few different diameters and once fitted heatshrink the ends so they don't unravel.

Not original looking but makes a really neat job Big Grin !

Not sure what was original but I should have thought something like this: https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/cloth-tapes/1371048?cm_mmc=UK-PLA-DS3A-_-google-_-PLA_UK_EN_Adhesives_%26_Sealants_%26_Tapes_Whoop-_-Cloth+Tapes_Whoop-_-1371048&matchtype=&pla-337160747014&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIreaqrbnR6gIVB7LtCh3RuA5oEAQYAiABEgIfrvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I've just bought black cloth tape, one sided mildly sticky, from ebay/china source very cheaply, in in various different widths.

I find the best stuff is Tesa 51608 cloth adhesive harness tape, available on ebay and other shops in a range of widths and lengths. Its flexible and wraps on easily, but the finished article looks like a cloth bound loom.

Thanks until now - the wanted item seems to be secret.

The tapes look older for me. Are the tapes near to an original harness? I have seen pictures with some kind of pipe (metal conduit) or tunnel.

+1 for dannyteal1990  's braided conduit as it's easier to clean. I have tried the cloth tapes and they get very dirty/oily in the engine compartment especially after a steam clean. If your car is oiltight and you have clean hands proper cotton braid looks best.

Bela, you may be referring to "armoured" wiring. This was standard on Sevens until the early thirties, about 1934. In 1935, the change was made to cloth covered.
