Probably the export type for rough roads - a well-known fitting on some export Austins.

It appears to be an uncommonly bouyant raft. I trust the waist sash is not some gang colour. When working in Africa Roald Dahl was always worried that the many snakes then encountered; if run over tended to flick into the car!
Did Biggles ever dress like that?

It is hard to resist captions, but in additon to the pro native anti colonialists I would have the LGBT set after me.

As in the back country here now in my 1960s car, I would have felt more secure in the middle of Africa in a newish pre war Austin than in an alternator/battery dependant modern packed with unfathomable unfixable electronics.
