Wanting to buy an Austin Seven - Chris Holden - 10-05-2020

I’m so pleased I have this forum.
I have been looking to buy and Austin Seven for sometime but even though its difficult in lockdown. I can only find some Sevens for sale on Classic car web sites.
I’m not sure if anyone here has any suggestions.
I have been looking at one for sale but concerned that the pedal layout seems odd as the accelerator pedal is positioned in the middle of pedal layout.

Anyway I hope you have time to read

Chris Holden

The one you've been looking at does seem to be odd if it has a central throttle. The standard pedal layout has the throttle pedal to the right.

Hi Chris, welcome.
Austin Sevens are great little cars, cheap to run, cheap to repair, huge following, lots of new parts available, and the pedals, all 3 of them are in the right place. If it's got a central throttle pedal it either been altered or its not an Austin Seven

First of all, join your local A7 club - a list can be found here: http://a7ca.org/member-clubs/
The larger clubs (PWA7C, A7OC) will tend to have more cars for sale in their magazines.
Next, work you what you want to do with your car. Static rallies, trips to the pub, holidays, long-distance tours, competition (navigational rallies, hill climbs & sprints, trials, racing)? This will help you to decide which sort of car you want.
Budget? Condition, age, model, etc will affect this. Look at adverts in the magazines and talk to the specialist A7 sales people.
A lot to think about!

People new to sevens should be very wary of specials, whilst there are some fantastic examples out there, there are also some very poorly conceived and executed examples which could easily trip the unwary. You only need to read this forum for a while to see the multitude of problems unsuspecting purchasers have inherited, some easily resolved but others requiring a lot of work and money spent.

Hi
I managed to find mine on eBay and am very happy with it. Always assume that you will have to do a bit of fettling irrespective of what you buy. Having said that new parts are cheap and plentiful and I suspect most of not all owners love being in their garages/workshops fiddling about, I certainly do.
