It depends if you have the correct speedo for the model. Do you have the needle or moving drum type?

RE: Speedo - Rogerchummy - 19-10-2019

I had a similar problem in knowing the length of my Chummy speedo cable but David Cockhrane of A7 Components Ltd (01788 522033) was able to advise - he will need to know the engine and gearbox numbers.

Ok... Now having looked at the seven workshop list, i see what your problem is! Why so many choices?! Do you have an answer yet Tim? If not, i will measure the one I took of my 35 ORT when I swapped back to a nemag.

Thanks Nick
No answer yet.
However I shall be calling on a friend who has a earlier Ruby to have a look.

The cables differ between early and late Rubies, because the angle and the size of the connection at the instrument differ.

A 1939 REMAX Catalogue states that all Austin 7's 1936 to 1939 had 48" inner and outer speedo cables though with differing end connections depending on the speedo fitted.

The REMAX part numbers are as follows:
1936 / 1938 Inner: CIA14 (Austin p/n 2H1847)
1936 / 1938 Outer: COA14 (Austin p/n 2H1847)
1939 Inner: CIA64
1939 Outer: COA64

1933 to 1936 Sevens are listed as 47" inner and outer - CIA13 and COA13 respectively (Austin p/n 2H1075)

Another 1940's Motor Factors catalogue offering Austin 7 'Universal Replacement' speedo cables lists a variety of lengths:
1933 / 1935 - 47"
1934 / 1938 - 50"
1934 / 1938 - 60"
Austin 8hp 1939 - 55"

Is it possible to fix or repair speedo inners? I've got outers and ends, and someone suggested it was easily possible.
I can see how if one has enough slack to take up, it could be using the existing parts if the break is at an end.

Is inner cable available? But if it was - how?! solder?

RE: Speedo - Chris Garner - 20-11-2020

Additional to Jeff's data, the following lengths of speedo cables may be useful to some:

1923 - 1926  ( Pulley Drive )             3' 9"
1927 - 1928                                    2' 1 7/8"
1928 - 1930                                    1' 1 13/16"
1928 - 1930                                    1' 6 1/2"
1931 - 1932                                    1' 4 1/4"
