Chemical cleaner - Nick Salmon - 25-09-2017

Could someone please suggest what chemical cleaner I could use to clean Zenith carb bodies?

RE: Chemical cleaner - Nick Turley - 25-09-2017

I really could recommend Soda Blasting.
No damage and the debris is water soluble

Thanks Nick. Whilst that might be ideal I was rather hoping to find something I can use at home.

I use brown sauce.

RE: Chemical cleaner - Austin Carr - 25-09-2017

A couple of posts from the HMVF that may help.

Ultrasonic cleaners are the best method. Lot of carb and gearbox specialists use them. Also some tool hire places. Probably get a cheap one on eBay but depends on your usage.

I have a small US cleaner from Aldi or Lidl. It works well enough for carbs and so.
p.s. if you need old Solex parts have look here. The man is selling his old carb collections.

Alan please tell us more! What do you do, just steep them in it for a few hours? or days?   - any particular brand?

Cover it quite thickly in brown sauce. Wrap in cling film to stop it drying out. Leave a day or two and wash clean. I use HP but other sauces are available.

I used to find that methylated spirits and an old toothbrush was effective. I don't know how good it is with modern petrol stains, but it's not expensive and you could drink it if it doesn't work!

I tried to buy some meths from a chemist and as the assistant put it into a paper bag I joked "don't bother to wrap it, I'll drink it straight from the bottle".

She wouldn't sell it to me!

Is alloy wheel cleaner any good?
