Sluggish starter - P J Quinn - 26-02-2019

Hi
My A7 was turning over very sluggishly on the starter before eventually firing up. As the battery was cracked at the pillar, I bought a new one and fully charged it only to find the same problem persisted. The second problem is the car is not charging either. What could the problems be and could they be connected?

Try running a good strong separate earth to the body of the starter motor - mounting bolts are good - and try again.

If you have no luck with that, try new brushes, if they are available.

Thanks Ruairidh. I'll try that.

You could also try checking the battery to earth lead as sometimes where it connects to the body it gets rusted or corroded. That can take a lot of the power that goes to the starter.

Thanks John
The engine was refurbed earlier this year and earth connection is good. In reply to Ruairidh the brushes on the dynamo are also good and dynamo has been tested and is also working.

Did you try the separate earth, a good strong jump lead would do temporarily?

No Ruairidh I didn't get a chance yet but will do when I'm off on Saturday.
