Austin annual productin numbers? - Tom Coates - 11-01-2019

Does anyone have any idea how many cars Austin were producing annually in the 1920’s? Preferably of all models but could be A7’s only.

I can only help with Sevens and these are (very) rough numbers...

1923 - 2500
1924 - 5000
1925 - 9000
1926 - 11000
1927 - 22000
1928 - 24000
1929 - 24000

"Car production continued and it was not till the 1925s that it was time to expand the factory yet again. It grew to 62 acres and gave employment to 8,000 workers who annually produced 25,000 cars."

"How great are the advances that have been made in methods of production is indicated by the fact that in 1906 the manufacture of 120 cars required 270 workers, whereas to-day over 60,0000 a year are turned out by rather more than 12,000 employees. "

(in 1929: that's 60,000 I'd say)

Thank you for correcting my (very) rough figures Mike Smile

The Seven really was the saviour, wasn't it?

Enjoyed Chris's link to Austin Seven memories.
Talking of reads, if your into racing Austin's, Father Christmas delivered 'Bert Hadley A son of Birmingham'.

Actually, Ruairidh, if you consider the mark-up on the Twelve was probably at least twice that of the Seven, the Twelve should really be seen as the saviour in the first half of the twenties.

Interesting.

RE: Austin annual productin numbers? - Austin in the Shed - 12-01-2019

All small scale production, take 1923 ,total Austin cars around 6,500.Ford produced 2 million model T's in the same year !

RE: Austin annual productin numbers? - Mike Costigan - 12-01-2019

To put things into perspective in the UK, Morris production in 1923 was 20,000 (growing to 33,000 in 1924 and 54,000 in 1925). But remember, until the introduction of the Twelve in 1922 Austin had never been in the mass production market: before the war Austin's maximum output had been less than 2,500 per year, and it took a major investment in 1926 to re-organise the production lines.
