Propshaft splines - Peter Naulls - 12-08-2018 I'm putting together another propshaft and decided to pump grease into the splines to see how much it reduced the minimal wear that was evident. Surprisingly the grease came out through a hole beside the UJ. I slid the splines apart to investigate and found that - except for the first 1/4" - they were completely dry.. Is the hole supposed to be plugged? Peter. RE: Propshaft splines - dickie65 - 12-08-2018 Hi Peter, The joints for the Ruby prop shaft are a very common item, They are the same as most of the cars of the fifties and sixty's Sprites, Midgets, Moggie Minors, Ford Escorts, ETC The hole in the end is essential to allow the shaft to move in and out of the splines and stop hydraulic locking. It looks like a full dismantle and rebuild might be a good idea. RE: Propshaft splines - Peter Naulls - 13-08-2018 Ah yes, I understand what you mean about the hydraulic locking, just a bit puzzled as to how any grease would ever work its way through to the splines! I'm changing the UJs, then it will be going off for balancing. Peter. |
