REBUILDING 19” SOLID CENTRE SCRIPT WHEELS - Steve Bryant - 05-07-2018

With this thread I am hoping to start a discussion on the rebuilding of 19” solid centre script wheels.

I will be using the original wheel hub centres with new rims and spoke / nipple kits from Richard – Bros. to refurbish the wheel rims of my 1929 AD Seven which are not really serviceable (damaged, out of round, corrosion etc.).

SO…. What methods, tips, tricks, tools and other related information can you offer to share with those of us contemplating this task?

Areas of interest would be:
·      Keeping things concentric on initial assembly.
·      Things to watch out for etc.

I have had a fair amount of experience rebuilding centre lock splined wire rims from MGs etc., but am interested in hearing from others who have had experience with rebuilding this particular type of A7 rim.
Any observations are welcome.

Cheers,
Stephen

There are a couple of article that should answer all your questions here: http://www.austin7.org/Technical%20Articles/New%20Spokes%20in%20Wheel/

Those articles look fairly comprehensive to me. The only thing I could add personally is that when mine were done (by Eric Booth - £10/wheel back in the day) he had a hub mounted on a bench-top jig so he could spin the wheel and observe for trueness. No reason why you couldn't do that directly on your car I guess.

wow chris,  eric booth.

back in the day, that must have been 20 to 30 years ago.

he always done a quality job though, and cheap.

sorry cant give input on spokes.

when i done my cars, i bought 20 rims from james wheeldon. and got warner cycles to spoke them, £50 a wheel including spokes for the last set. had them done over a number of years. the first set cost £36 a wheel including spokes.

saved the time to put into other stuff.

good luck with the wheel builds, its an important job to do. it keeps you out of the hedge.

tony.

Eric was a smashing old chap, in a rather unlikely looking shed behind an off licence if I remember right. I guess it was his 'retirement' job. He can't have done a bad job, the wheels are still going strong!

Had 2 done recently by Nick Mouat. They are excellent and a quick turnaround.

I recently had an 18-inch van wheel re-rimmed/re-spoked and powdercoated by  Anglia Wheels in Halstead. They did an excellent job.

What's the going rate for:

A: Getting someone to do it for you?
B: The cost of a rim plus spokes?

I ask as I am in custody of a growing pile of rattling / rusty rimmed 18" & 19" wheels that I'd like to start using.

You could try dropping a line to Nick Mouat. I looked at his stall on Sunday during the Beaulieu Austin 7 rally, so he apparently has an interest in 'our' kind of cars.
