Hi All,
This may seem a pretty basic question. Is the engine number the one on the off side rear of the crankcase which begins with the letter "M"? Is there another engine number to look for?

Yep, that's about right, next to the oil pressure union. The next question will be - How do I tell the age of the engine from its Engine Number. "The Austin Seven" By Wyatt has a good reference for the engine numbers from about page 178 onwards and this site has loads of info on body numbers etc http://archive.a7ca.org/about-the-archive/identifying-your-seven/
