Locktite 243 blue nutlock works OK a bit heat will release it, the lockwasher can also foul the centre of the clutch plate. If the oilseal plate touches the flywheel use the thin gaskets skim the face of the plate and set the seal in a little deeper. You can measure the flywheel boss to rear bearing clearance by fitting the flywheel without the key and use the vernier depth gauge through the keyway slot then remove and measure nut face to back of boss subtract one from the other gives you accurate clearance measurement to allow for the oil thrower that you need even with an oil seal fitted. GOOD NEWS to round off this thread.

Any one who suggested loose flywheel can have a gold star.

The flywheel was very loose, the tab washer was actually moving! The nut was tight on the thread and 2mm short of the flywheel boss.
Needles to say the flywheel is now in very tight following the various advice given.

Virtually all the major knocks, bangs and rattles have gone.

Still a few minor issues to keep us interested, but at least we’re back on the road again.

Thanks again for all the advice.
Richard.

Pleased to hear that your engine problem has been cured.    It has proved two points:   firstly, noises that appear to come from one end of the engine are generally coming from the other end, and secondly,  ominous noises that sound like the engine is totally wrecked are more often than not something very simple and easy to fix.

Great news Richard, but how had the flywheel get like that in the first place if there was that much gap prior? Was it a hasty assembly prior to an acquisition by you?
