Today was a day that I have been waiting for for a long time. My Box Saloon was my first car, bought in 1970 and was my only transport until 1982 when the arrival of children led to what I call my 'Wilderness Years' and the car was pushed to the back of the garage where it lay for 10 years or more. When I returned to it, it was apparent that it had suffered a great deal of abuse at my hands and required a pretty thorough restoration. The bodywork was beyond my capabilities and the chap doing it said he would re-instigate the sliding roof that had been sealed up and the rear portion of the rails had been removed. Anyway, skip ahead until the early naughties and having been distracted by the use of my Cabriolet I had bought in the meantime, I returned to the Box. I really wanted to make sure the roof was functional and watertight before I fitted the headlining. Sadly, this proved not to be quite the case and there were issues in the operation of the sliding panel. Back in the garage it went for another 10 years but today, armed with a new kit of wood from Martin Prior, I embarked upon the more accurate rebuild of the roof. The previous chap had made a good stab at it, but the likes of Martin have led the way in a better understanding of exactly how these sorts of things should be made. A morning's work have left me with this. I am excited to finally get this done and have the car back on the road...

A bit of a do near Cleveland Tontine today. Two sevens attended, me with my Ruby and this grey Ruby pickup. Not a bad conversion, but why?

It was probably converted when a Ruby was “just a Ruby” today of course, a Ruby is revered as it has survived being stripped to build an Ulster style special!

A tidy job there squire, if a little OTT with the security chains, I bet they rattle like fun.
Could it be the result of a tail-end "Didn't see your brake lights mate..." ? I like it but would have possibly made the bed a little longer.

Hence the security chains?
On Thursday I attended the Heather and Honey Run, based at Felixkirk near Thirsk. This is a 40 mile road run followed by a lunch all in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Organised by the Yorkshire Branch of the PWA7C, I devised the route. Unfortunately the little bridge at Rievaulx Abbey was closed so the entrants needed to do some re-routing but all got back to Felixkirk.
I was disappointed not to get the long haul award but I only live a mile up the road! The RL saloon was sulking about my moving house so I took the Pytchley which went very well.
Several Austin 7's including Chummies, 2 -seat tourers, a Swallow, Nippy and the ex-Geoff Winder Speedy. Also some exotic stuff but we are not interested in that! I reckoned that the Desmo Supermarine radiator mascot on a lovely Invicta Sports probably cost more than my Pytchley did to build. A good day for a very worthy cause.

Not so much what did I do to my Austin as what it did to me... although perhaps more on the subject of self inflicted injuries..?
I was trying to work out how I managed to get sunburn on my left knee... then I remembered the welding I did yesterday making a reversed water outlet and steering wedge for the Speedex... oops

In my experience TIG gives worse burns than MIG - the vee at the neck of overalls is the easiest mistake.

Full overalls, leather welding apron, welding gloves, leather hat and full face mask every time despite the weather.
