There is a lot of play in the big ends. I tried to post a video, but I don’t think it is possible. About 1/32 of an inch. I presume this is not normal!

Hi

I’ve found the best way to post videos is to make a YouTube video then post the link.

Cheers

Howard

Are these shims normal? Seems a horrid solution if they are! All four conrods have them in varying numbers!

Looks like a rebuild by Signor El bodgero.

RE: Introduction from a New Owner! - Alan - 24-07-2023

Some Rolls Royces had shims like that

RE: Introduction from a New Owner! - Ruairidh Dunford - 24-07-2023

Shims were a normal and accepted practice back in the day.

Hi

The side play on the big end bearings can be up to 1/16” according to Woodrow’s ‘The Austin Seven Manual’.  If you don’t have this book I would definitely recommend it. It is stocked by Cherished Suppliers and available from ‘Mercury Vintage Services’ susan.woodrow@gmail.com.

Cheers

Howard

Shims and side play aren't necessarily and issue.
Clean up the big end and share a picture of the bearing face too.

Thank you all! I have ordered a copy of Woodrow!

1/16th play sounds a huge amount!

There are definitely problems ahead though…

Had shims like that on a 1927 side-valve Riley I once owned. Seems they were the norm way back then.
