I have the interesting circumstance of having a hyphenated first name (John-Peter) - what I have discovered over the years is that the only part of the (North American) world that 'gets' a hyphenated mans name was when I lived in Quebec. (Jean Claude Jean Guy etc) Even when we lived in the south of the USA you would expect in the world of Billy Bob's that they would get it, but, no. So in my life about 2/3 call me JP and the rest John-Peter and a very few who call me John. I have the further slight nuance that JP is too informal for some and John-Peter too formal for others.
