Nothing quite as catastrophic but it could have been. I went out with the Mem'Sahib and another couple the other day to a restaurant about 20 miles away in the Cévennes. On the way back I noticed a tinkiling sound coming from the rear, which I thought was probably the luggage rack or the exhaust clamp on the tailpipe. As it was dark and I had no torch I carried on and got home safely. As I was cleaning the wheels I noticed a broken spoke on the rear offside wheel - one of the shorter ones. Then as I continues to check the others I discovered two more broken! Probably not far from a total collapse. I am now looking at a short term repair with some replacement spokes, but a full 4 wheel re-build before I tackle the "El Camino"... you just never know.
