Not wanting to sound like a ass, looks like a VW beetle in the picture, first was sold in the UK in 1952 ... the factory was all but flattened in the war, could the photo be taken later ? if not then thats a very very early beetle :-)

Perhaps the car you mean - is it the one with the split rear window? - is one of the 'airline' designs from the late 1930s - possibly a Standard 12 or 20?
