Whilst at Uni my RN smoked from this area - keeping the window open dragged the smoke into and through the cockpit, If I left the window closed however the smoke was forced out under the car.

I would address the route cause, not nice to be chuffing excess fumes, a clear indication that something is amiss, guides or rings as already suggested.
