Ray Walker in Cambridge warned my friend with crash box to check the gear lever. Apparently it is prone to snapping which can result in ending up with a detached gear lever in your hand when in dire need of third gear for retardation.

Not only the crash box, my synchro box delivered me the same surprise when changing into second after a hefty hill start on climbing the hill up from Pangbourne after crossing the Thames. It snapped round the groove for the circlip that holds the chrome bezel in place. I now *always* carry a spare gear lever with me...
