RE: I don't know much about art but... - Tony Press - 24-09-2024 (24-09-2024, 02:46 PM)Andy Bennett Wrote: Through a series of installations and kinetic, musical sculptures, Kaur works with sonic memory and the cultural resonances of everyday materials and objects. Axminster carpet, bottles of blessed Irn Bru, political flyers and salvaged family photographs are re-worked to evoke new cultural readings. By weaving together vernacular objects and sound, she considers how political ideologies are carried in community spaces. And that is the definition of B*llsh*t RE: I don't know much about art but... - Dave Mann - 25-09-2024 If people want to spent their money on that they are welcome, I think it's a load of manure. RE: I don't know much about art but... - Ian Wegg - 25-09-2024 Damian Hirst had an artwork consisting of a collection of beer bottles, coffee cups and overflowing ashtrays, until a gallery cleaner swept it up! Maurizio Cattelan's artwork "Comedian" is a banana taped to a wall. Apparently it cost $129,000, which is quite a markup on the raw materials. Occasionally a visitor will eat the banana and the gallery staff stick up a fresh one. The late Brian Sewell once wrote: "I don't know what art is, but I do know what it isn't. And it isn't someone walking around with a salmon over his shoulder or embroidering the name of everyone they have slept with on the inside of a tent." ...which is pretty much my stance. RE: I don't know much about art but... - Nick Salmon - 25-09-2024 For those (like me) who think some 'art' is anything but, here's another candidate. It was on display at the Scottish Modern Art Gallery a few years ago. About five feet tall, with a rag at its base and, yes, a feather stuck in the end of what may well have once been a large, wire coathanger. I was frowned upon for bursting out laughing when I walked into the room. _DSC0511.JPG (Size: 64.97 KB / Downloads: 201) RE: I don't know much about art but... - Steve Jones - 25-09-2024 Maybe it's my Yorkshire cynicism but I do wonder if the acceptance of some of this crap as 'art' is a case of 'The King's New Clothes'. Somebody produces something, someone else in the Art World (maybe by prior arrangement ) says it's wonderful and then all the others follow suit for fear of ridicule for saying what they really think, or, worse, that they don't understand. Result, a pile of junk priced at good money. I think we could all produce such an item. Maybe AI could produce the flowery description needed Steve RE: I don't know much about art but... - Ivor Hawkins - 25-09-2024 I think they are all sniggering behind the backs of art critics. A figoni et falaschi body, now that is art! RE: I don't know much about art but... - David Stepney - 25-09-2024 It was Marcel Duchamp, who submitted what was basically a urinal on its side, as an exhibit in an art exhibition just after to first world war, saying that everyday things could be elevated to works of art by the act of choice by the artist. Given that he was a very talented painter, I often wonder whether his 'Fountain' (as he called it) was his way of calling out the pretentiousness of the art establishment. (it was signed " R Mutt"). Unfortunately, Duchamp's little joke didn't appear to have worked! RE: I don't know much about art but... - Duncan Grimmond - 25-09-2024 I don't know much about art but I know what I like... RE: I don't know much about art but... - Tony Griffiths - 26-09-2024 I recall watching "Bitter Lake" a film that features a clip about the Urinal and an attempt to educate the Afghans about it - and no, I'm not making that up. You can't view the film in the UK, but if you have a VPN log onto the USA and you can. The "Urinal in Afghanistan" story is explained here: https://unherd.com/2018/11/how-duchamps-urinal-embodies-the-liberal-west/. RE: I don't know much about art but... - Denis Sweeney - 26-09-2024 For those of you of a certain age, as Fyfe Robertson so eloquently put it “……..not so much art more like Fart” |
