Thanks all for the info. Seems to be multiple successful ways of doing this - not surprising with so many talented and innovative Austin 7 owners in the Forum.

Seeing the bore hole for the stud is 0.453", the same as required by a 7/16" Helicoil, I might just tap the original stud to 7/16" and use it that way.
