I think that could be repaired either with a small inset leather section bridging the gap between the adjacent seams; or with a strong canvas stuck on the back with suitable glue; again, from seam to seam. As others have said, there will still be some inherent weakness, but old upholstery looks lovely and I'd drag it out as long as possible.

I agree with Chris, old upholstery is beautiful, have you considered Connolising or another leather restoration system prior to repair? You maybe able to save it...
