Martin, 

That is exactly what I did, when I made my new tank I took all the fittings off the old one and used them on the new one.
The tank was bolted on to the 30 mm return and as Bob says the number plate bracket was sandwiched between the two plates. I too used nuts and bolts, no U bolts.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

Martin's brackets look to be very similar to the originals which I'm re-using.  The car was last rebuilt in the 1980s and had a thin rubber strip between the brackets and the tank when I started my rebuild

The threads on the original ubolts are corroded so I will be replacing  them with 2 bolts joined with a strip welded on top to stop them rotating when twisting the nuts on and off

Here's a pic of the floor from inside the car showing the additional (original?) plate where the the brackets are bolted
