The only thing I can add to this is
the bobbin I removed from my 26 sports some 50 years ago, was held together by a blind small nail each side.
I am currently suffering from a vibration between 30 and 40 and hope it eminates from the tailshaft. Ruaridh your "Gob" theory bears investigating, cheers Russell

I can confirm the small blind nail observation Russell.
I presume you are familiar with the trick of rotating the jubilee clip (or whatever you have) until the vibration is reduced?

I will pop primrose on the hoist tomorrow and check. I will also check if the bobbin is a sliding fit as someone wished to know, and report back. cheers Russell.

I can confirm the two blind nails in an original bobbin and the careful placement of the (in my case) jubilee clips to stop tailshaft vibration.
