In most moderns cannot keep your foot to the floor for half an hour at a time.

I can't and quite often use my left foot on the throttle on long runs in my own motor (no cruise control). 

Its like steering with your knees, or changing gear without the clutch, easy once youve got the hang of it

Never mind steering with one's knees. Have you tried a modern car with "lane following" and "autonomous cruise control"? It's almost possible for the driver to prepare a full picnic spread and distribute it around the car......and I bet that some idiot will try it one day.
