With an 1 5/16" 2-bearing crank we used to take 20 thou off pistons 2 and 3.

You can just ease off a bit when it starts rattling

Many thanks for your thoughts gents, I probably should have mentioned that it is dry assembled and without any base gasket at the moment.  I must say I hadn't expected base gaskets to be as thick as 17 or 27 thou.  So I guess when compressed even the thin one would probably bring my pistons down to deck height, which would leave the head gasket thickness as clearance on No.s 1&4 and I could reduce 2&3 by a small amount if I feel it necessary.

Be careful that the head gasket doesn’t overlap the cylinder holes. If you have +80 rebore sometimes it can.
