High tensile stressed parts should not be subject to acid ie springs, spokes, steering and susp parts.

Jon you only need make simple blanking plates from stiff aluminium sheet to close up the holes, seal with silicone goo.
Warm citric acid does a pretty fair job and is rather less toxic than oxalic.

I've just cleaned two blocks and one head by totally immersing in a rectangular mop bucket for a couple of days and I'm confident that the Citric Acid only dissolves the rust.
The clean up has been excellent and in one case I did a block twice. Problem is that the acid is neutralised after dissolving a certain amount of rust
