RE: Reliant engine and gearbox - Phil Kingdom - 17-03-2018 If you were building a special a Reliant engine makes a good and cheaper alternative to the standard A7 engine, fitting a Reliant engine to a standard road going car will give better performance but will devalue the car in the long run. I can't comment on an A8 or SV engine, but to fit a Reliant OHV in a A7 you will need to fit the engine quite far forward and above the chassis rails or modify the sump pan to use the A7 propshaft, you will need to make new engine / gearbox mounts, exhaust down pipe and fit a pedal box for the clutch the bulkhead and floor will have to be modified plus you will need to convert 12v electrics. These mods are not to difficult to do and do make a Ruby more usable in modern traffic, but unless you intend to keep the car long term or you are in need of a new engine it's probably best to keep it standard. RE: Reliant engine and gearbox - merlinart - 18-03-2018 I saw a 750cc Coventry Climax engine for sale and wished I'd bought it now. I rather liked the "heritage" idea about it, I suppose it simply invokes ideas of the 1950s/60s...and of course war time fire pumps and searchlight battery motors! Out of interest Ian, why does this engine interest you more than the Reliant, I am intrigued to hear your answers? They produce extraordinary revs and look to be a huge amount of fun. One of the Forum users in Norfolk has also put one into his special - laser cut a gearbox adaptor plate, perhaps he can be persuaded to comment further. I did find a photo of an installation in a Seven and will now search again for it. Arthur |
