Hi Ivor
Pubs here had a trapdoor or grating in the footpath. I am old enough to remember watching staved barrels being rolled down. A rope was used to slow and control.
When I was house hunting 45 years ago I was always very nervous opening underhouse doors for inspection. Often some giant dog lurked behind.

Many pubs here still get beer like that. And some houses get coal delivered the same way.

And my old local had a door like that under the bar window and a wooden ramp down which the dreymen used to roll the barrels...I feel a song coming on!
