Unless you have documentary evidence to link the chassis number and registration you will not. And I stress will not be succesfull. There have been cases in the past where people managed to blagg it, but those days are long gone

But remember it can be any pre 1988 documentary evidence.

I did the research to recover a number for a 1906 machine that had been in a museum years. We had a number of documentary sources and were successfull. No issues at all.

Funny thing was the owner then got a letter wanting back tax since 1906!. Given it wasnt registered untill 1921 I thought it was a bit of a cheek!.
